What is going on in the world? That is a question I have been asking myself the last few weeks. When the new year started, I was hopeful and eager to get to work to develop my brand and business. Alas it didn’t work out that way. I got sick the first week of January and I have basically been out of commission these last few weeks. This weekend was the first time I started feeling like myself again.
On top of that, there has been some really fucked up things going on in the world. H&M put out a racially incentive ad featuring a black boy wearing a top that said “Coolest monkey in the jungle.” Revolve hosted the annual #revolvearoundtheworld trip, which AGAIN didn’t feature any women of color or of different sizes. And in most recent news #45’s comments on Haiti.
Now let’s be clear, Trump’s comments no longer surprise me. He is an idiot Point, Blank, Period. Also Revolve have been using the same bloggers for years. The first time I realized this is when they held their annual blogger awards. Not one black blogger was featured in any category. They do this all of the time, it’s not okay but its nothing new. H&M however should have known better, but I’m beginning to think brands are doing this on purpose for publicity. I mean seriously, no one thought it might be offensive? It seems that although it is a new year, things are going backwards.
While I do think it is very important to know whats going on in the world, now more than ever. I also believe it is essential to stay positive. Try to not let what is happening consume you, and use your frustration to do something about it. For example the whole Revolve issue of them leaving out certain demographics, inspired bloggers to come together. People have been mentioning other bloggers on their platform which exposes them to a different audience. Instagram pages have been created to feature #WOC (women of color). There is a movement that wasn’t there before and its amazing. Some people have also chosen to no longer shop at H&M and invest their money in brands that represent them properly.
I hope you read this and it inspires you to take a negative situation and make it positive. Be angry with what is going on in the world, but try to create change in some capacity.
If there isn’t a seat at the table, create your own damn table.
Thanks for reading and Happy (late) New Year.
